Differences Between Regular Barcode Scanners and Industrial Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners are common yet unfamiliar computer scanning devices, mainly divided into two categories: regular barcode scanners and industrial barcode scanners. What are the differences between them? Let me break it down for you:

1. Performance Differences between Barcode Scanners and Industrial Scanners

When it comes to industry, we think not only about its large workload but also its high demands. Due to the complexity of industrial environments, factors such as scanning barcodes in strong outdoor light, scanning at long distances, or dealing with fine barcode density can make regular scanners unable to meet the special requirements for barcode collection in industrial settings. Therefore, industrial scanners are needed. Regular barcode scanners, like those in supermarkets scanning common EAN-13 codes, often deal with printed barcodes of clear quality, making them easily scannable. So, regular scanners are sufficient for these purposes. Industrial scanners are mainly used for scanning small labels and DPM (Direct Part Marking) codes, especially those on metal surfaces.

2. Different IP Ratings for Barcode Scanners

Due to the differences between industrial and supermarket environments, industrial settings may involve liquids, impact vibrations, or excessive dust. Therefore, industrial scanners are used, usually measured by IP ratings to determine the stability and reliability of the scanner. In contrast, supermarkets have lower requirements for the IP rating of scanners and are less concerned about issues like water splashes.

3. Price Differences for Scanners

Industrial scanners have high performance, are durable, and have features like shock resistance, dustproofing, and waterproofing, making them more expensive. Supermarket scanners, while also having certain IP ratings, are generally lower in industrial grading due to cost considerations. Therefore, supermarket scanners range from a few hundred to over a thousand, much lower compared to industrial scanners. Despite the differences between industrial and supermarket scanners, both aim to achieve better barcode scanning and collection.

4. Different Hardware Designs

The design of industrial barcode scanners takes into account small labels (requiring high precision), reflective metal surfaces with DPM codes (needing good light sources), and a rugged exterior (due to harsh working conditions). In contrast, regular scanners are mainly used in supermarkets and warehouses, focusing more on scanning paper barcodes. They are smaller, lighter, and not designed for use in harsh industrial environments. They may struggle to scan DPM codes on reflective metal surfaces and small barcodes on labels.

In conclusion, the choice between regular barcode scanners and industrial scanners depends on the environment. Scanners used in supermarkets and factories serve different purposes and are designed accordingly. It's not about the higher price being better, but rather considering the usage environment.
