        A camera is a remote sensor used to capture and store or transmit images. Light is collected by an optical system and focused onto a photosensitive surface (sensor), which converts the intensity and frequency of electromagnetic radiation into information through chemical or electronic processes.

 The simplest of these systems consists of a darkroom or obscura into which light enters only through a small hole and is focused on the opposite wall, where it can be seen visually or photographed with light-sensitive material (i.e., film). This imaging method dates back centuries and is known as the camera obscura (Latin for "dark room") method, from which the modern camera takes its name.

   Camera technology has improved greatly over the past few decades with the development of charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and, more recently, CMOS technology. Previous standard systems, such as tube cameras, are no longer in use. The improvement in image resolution and acquisition speed has undoubtedly improved the imaging quality and speed of machine vision cameras .
